The
mermaid
One Friday morning,
a ship set sail,
and she sailed not far from land.
And her crew did espay a fair pretty maid,
With a comb and a glass in her hand.
Refrein:
And the ragin' seas did roar!
And the stormy winds did blow!
And we bully sailor men was layin' out aloft,
and the landlubbers layin' down below, below, below,
and the landlubbers layin' down below.
Then up, spoke the
boy of our gallant ship,
and a well speaking boy was he.
"I've a father and mother in fair Plymouth town,
and this night they 'll be weeping' there for me".
Refrein:
Then up, spoke the
mate of our gallant ship,
and a fine bold mate was he.
"I 've married a wife in fair London town,
and this night a widow she will be".
Refrein:
Then up spoke the
captain of our gallant ship,
and a fine old man was he.
"This sweet mermaid has warned us of our doom,
we shall sink to rhe bottom of the see".
Refrein:
The moon shone bright
and the stars gave light,
and my mother was looking for me.
She might look and weep with watery eyes,
she might look at the bottom of the sea.
Refrein:
Three times round
went our gallant ship,
and three times round went she.
Three times round went our gallant ship,
then she sank to the bottom of the sea.
